Smokey Bones: Barbecue with my Auntie

Younger Ashleigh would go out to eat with her mom and aunties and ask for the food off of their plates. So much to the point where one of my aunts would tell my mom that she needed to start ordering me adult plates because obviously the kiddie menu wasn’t enough food for me.

Many years later, I was able to repay that aunt by inviting her to accompany me to the new Smokey Bones at the Mall of Georgia. I hadn’t seen her in a while so I loved catching up over endless barbecue.

Both managers Rob and Yarrii hooked us up. Our waitress, Jaleesa, was superb as well. All of her suggestions were delicious and her personality was a delight. I felt like I gained a little cousin for the two hours we were there.

smokey-bones-cornbread

This cornbread was the best cornbread I’ve ever had in my life. I’m sorry to every grandmother in life that I’ve offended, but it’s true. They found a way to make it like a cakey-cornbread so I could skip dessert and just eat this. Plus, the pecan honey butter makes you literally want to slap your mother. I don’t condone violence though, so.

smokey-bones-appetizers

Y’all know I don’t eat chicken but listen. They said try this chicken. I said okay, sure just to be a team player. And then I had to reevaluate my life for the last three years because those wings were delicious. I’ve tried chicken occasionally and every time, I am disappointed thus affirming my disdain for the bird. But you know what? Smokey Bones is now my exception to the rule. Y’all. Y’ALL.

The pulled pork nachos were also a good move. Not super cheesy like your typical nachos, but the flavor definitely holds it own. A great appetizer selection.

Our meal was great, as usual. I’d been craving ribs for a minute so to try their St. Louis and baby back ribs tickled that fancy. Was also super pleased with the amount and quality of sides you can choose from. My personal favorites were the baked beans and macaroni and cheese. And I don’t trust everyone’s mac & cheese either.

smokey-bones-mojito

I’d be extremely remiss if I didn’t mention my mojito. Jaleesa hooked it up with adding coconut to it, which wasn’t too much but gave it a good flavor. I’m all about great flavor. Not too strong either for a Sunday night but a great way to end the weekend.

smokey-bones-donuts

We wrapped up the meal with a slice of chocolate cake and donuts. The chocolate cake was lighter than I would’ve imagined. Usually, chocolate cakes are heavy and fudgy but not this one. The ice cream-to-cake ratio was a bit off, but overall, a good dessert. But Smokey Bones shines when it comes to their donuts. An old coworker put me on to cinnamon sugar donuts and so these brought me nostalgia and joy at the same time.

Last Sunday was perfect. To end such a full weekend with great food and quality time with my aunt was worth it. The staff at Smokey Bones made this an awesome experience and I honestly can not wait until I return.
